No matter how well we take care of our teeth and no matter how diligent we are with scheduling and keeping regular dental appointments, accidents may happen. Dr. Thomas R. Watkins and our team understand how important it is to know what to do in those kinds of situations, so we have put together this information for your convenience. In any dental emergency, it is imperative that you visit our office as soon as you can.
Knocked Out Tooth
If a tooth becomes knocked out because of a blow or injury, rinse the root in water. Take care not to remove any attached soft tissue fragments. If possible, reinsert the tooth in its socket. Do not force the tooth into place. If the tooth will not reinsert readily, store it in water or a cup of milk and bring it with you to our office.
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area of tooth fragments and debris. Use a cold compress on the face to reduce any swelling.
In the case of a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss the area gently and carefully to remove any food that may be trapped between the teeth. Do not apply aspirin to the tooth or gums.
