One of the main reasons why orthodontics is so beneficial today is because it can correct bite issues, also known as malocclusion. Bite issues make it difficult to eat, talk, smile, and even whistle, which is why our orthodontist, Dr. Watkins, is happy to offer treatment to correct these issues and give his patients the perfect smiles they deserve.
There are four different types of malocclusion in San Antonio, TX, and those types are:
An open bite involves an anterior opening between the upper and lower teeth. When you bite down, the back teeth will touch but the front teeth will not, leaving a gap between the two jaws. This problem is generally caused by tongue-thrusting habits or thumb-sucking habits.
An overbite involves the vertical overlapping of the upper teeth over the lower teeth. Typically, the upper front teeth will slide over and cover your lower teeth when you bite down. This problem is generally caused by genetics, a misaligned jaw, or teeth-harming habits, like eraser chewing and nail biting.
An overjet is the horizontal projection of the upper front teeth beyond the lower front teeth. This issue is due to a large upper jaw, a small lower jaw, or a combination between the two.
A crossbite is when the top front teeth bite inside the lower front teeth. This can occur with the front or back teeth. Generally, this problem is due to genetics, prolonged thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, misaligned teeth, or missing teeth.
