There are many great New Year’s Resolutions to choose from: losing weight, eating clean, exercising more, learning a language, finally cleaning out the garage. But, might we suggest a simple goal that WON’T be forgotten by Valentine’s Day? It’s a simple habit that could make a world of difference in your oral hygiene: taking care of your toothbrush.

To start, your toothbrush needs replacing if it is more than a few months old. Toothbrushes should only be kept for 3-4 months. If they look frayed or worn out, they should be replaced sooner.

After brushing with your new toothbrush, rinse it off thoroughly to remove any leftover toothpaste, food particles, or other debris.

Store your toothbrush in an upright position. This allows the water to drain off and the toothbrush to dry out. Also, store your toothbrush on its own, away from other toothbrushes. If toothbrush heads touch, they become contaminated with the bacteria from the other brush. If a toothbrush becomes contaminated, throw it away.

On a similar note: never, EVER share a toothbrush, with anyone. Sharing toothbrushes spreads food particles, bacteria, infection, and disease between mouths. If someone other than you has used your toothbrush, throw it away immediately and buy a new one as soon as you can.
