Does the thought of visiting the dentist give you anxiety? Does the thought of enduring the pain of a toothache seem preferable than having a dentist appointment? You are not alone in your fears. Many people are so afraid of going to the dentist that they prefer to go without treatment. If you have a fear of the dentist and dental procedures, Dr. Watkins may recommend sedation dentistry in San Antonio, Texas. Sedation can be used for invasive procedures and for simple ones like a dental filling, depending on the severity of the fear.

With sedation dentistry, our dentists use medication to help you relax during dental procedures. There are different levels of sedation, including:

  • Minimal sedation, in which you are awake but relaxed
  • Moderate sedation, in which you will not remember much of the treatment and you may slur your words
  • Deep sedation, in which you are on the edge of consciousness and can still be woken up
  • General anesthesia*, in which you are unconscious

There are different types of sedation our dentists may use during a procedure. Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is inhaled through a mask that is placed over the nose. The gas helps you relax and wears off quickly. Oral sedation is taken in a pill form. Depending on the dosage given, this will produce minimal or moderate sedation. With deep sedation and general anesthesia, you will receive medications that will make you either almost or fully unconscious during the procedure.
